Hard work pays off!
I’ve been busy working on my launch as a solo artist for over a year now. Preparing, creating and getting to know the real me. I want you to know you really got to think about what kind of artist you want to be and try to stay as authentic as possible. So next to making music and creating songs you really have some soul searching to do. Because when you know who you are and how you want to present yourself the easier it gets to sell yourself not only as an artist but as a brand.
A lot of people don’t like to see them self as a brand or as a product. But in fact you are. And it’s better to think that way if you want to make a living out of it. Every great brand has its core values and has a clear vision of where the brand is going. It really forms an identity of its own. Which is great cause that also means you have an idea of who your fans or consumers will be.
I like to think that by thinking and brainstorming about these things it will further help you develop a career in the music business. Cause if you know who for example your audience is and what kind of message you want to get across you can form your music in shapes that will fit perfectly with everything else. I’m not going to lie to you sometimes I just wanted to make music. All the other stuff just felt like a lot of work. And believe me I didn’t want to write down how my childhood was and why I believe in certain things and why I am who I am today. But it really helped me to get to know myself and brand myself. That’s why it’s easier now looking for collaborations with the right brands for sponsoring with just the right message that fits my vision.
Next to optimizing your brand of course you got to find the right sound. And that on its own is something you can’t really put a deadline on. Cause sometimes your just not as creative as you want to be. It takes a lot of patience and work making all sorts of songs and demo’s. And often it still isn’t really what you wanted to sound like. But every time you work on something new you learn new things and more importantly you learn what you like and really don’t like about your vocals or productions. So you get closer to that unique sound that makes you ‘You’.
Also finding the right producers and musicians to work with is a challenge on itself. Cause your just not always going to vibe as well with everyone. And they are artists as well and often have a busy schedule for themselves. It took me a while to find the right people. But after a year searching and just working on different projects with different writers and producers I found some producers who really complement my talent and really are able to create what I like to hear. Nobody said it would be easy but it will be worth it. I promise, all your hard work will pay off!
When you finally have that sound you like (and the image and branding on lock) you can work on going to the next level. The next level is recording your songs and make a EPK (Electronic Press Kitt). More about recording and how to make a great EPK on my next blog.
